Quickly get your bank transactions and balances automatically in an Excel workbook.

Here's our recommended workflow for getting started with Tiller Money Feeds for Microsoft Excel. You can start in the Tiller Foundation Template for Excel or if you prefer to use or build your own template you can start in a blank Excel workbook.

Prerequisites

  • Started a free trial for Tiller

  • Connected one or more financial institutions

  • Excel installed from Microsoft 365 subscription if you want to use Desktop app, otherwise see notes on Using Excel Online

Coming from Money in Excel

If you're coming from Money in Excel we recommend that you use this guide to get started for the most seamless transition from Money in Excel.

Our recommended workflow

When you're starting out with Tiller for Microsoft Excel we recommend that you use the Foundation Template. It's our default supported template that's been curated to help you get to know your money, understand your cash flow, budget wisely, and gain financial confidence.

Your bank data is automated to the Foundation Template using the Tiller Money Feeds add-in for Microsoft Excel.

Connecting Tiller Money Feeds to the Foundation Template

    1. If you want to store your workbook on OneDrive make sure you do a Save As and save to an Online location. Pay attention to the OneDrive account you’re signed into when storing online so you know where to find your file.

    2. If you prefer to keep your workbook stored locally on your computer, do a Save as, give it a unique name, and pick a file location you will easily remember.

    3. The Excel spreadsheets you've created with Tiller will either be in the OneDrive for the Microsoft account you were using with Excel at the time you created them or saved locally on your computer. When you do a "Save as," you're prompted to pick a location. The default location is usually the last place you saved an Excel workbook.

  1. Install the Tiller Money Feeds add-in for Excel.

    1. Open My Add-ins from the Insert ribbon in your Excel workbook

    2. Search for "Tiller" in the Store

    3. Click "Add" and the add-in will appear in your Data ribbon.

    4. Direct Install Link from Microsoft Store (if above steps don’t work)

  2. Open the Tiller Money Feeds add-in from the Data ribbon and sign in

    1. Sign in using the account you used to subscribe to Tiller. Note: this could be different than the account you use for your Microsoft 365 subscription.

  3. Link the workbook

    1. After signing in you’ll be prompted to link the workbook to the Tiller Console. This creates the connection between the workbook and the accounts you have linked.

  4. Link accounts to set up your data feed

    1. Click the “Link Accounts” button in the add-in task pane.

    2. Toggle on the accounts that should feed transaction and balance data to the sheet.

    3. Click “Confirm.”

  5. Fill your sheet with data

    1. Click the “Fill” button at the top of the add-in task pane to fill the transactions and balances for linked accounts.

    2. Click this “Fill” button any time you need to get new data into the sheet.

Customizing your template

Once you've filled bank transactions and balances into your Foundation template it's time to get it set up for your unique financial situation. You can choose your categories, build AutoCat rules, and see all your balances in one place.

At this point, you'll be automatically opted into a 7 email day series where we deliver tips to help you get set up with your Foundation Template. The series is self paced and follows along with the Tiller Foundations Guide.

Start with your own template or a blank workbook

You can feed data into any Excel workbook using the Tiller Money Feeds add-in. If you prefer not to start in the Tiller Foundation Template, you can connect the Tiller Money Feeds add-in to your own template or a blank Excel workbook.

Using Excel Online

You can use the Tiller Money Feeds add-in for Excel with Excel Online with or without a Microsoft 365 subscription.

⚠️ Some customers have reported that Excel Online does not work in Safari 14 on MacOS Catalina, but does work in Firefox 80.0.1.

  1. Open a blank Excel Online workbook or save the Tiller Foundation Template to your OneDrive.

  2. Rename the workbook at the top (e.g. overwrite "Book 1" or “Tiller Foundation Template”)

  3. Open the Insert Ribbon

  4. Click “Office Add-ins”

  5. Click on “Store” and search for “Tiller” to add the Tiller Money Feeds add-in to Excel

  6. Open the Tiller Money Feeds add-in from the Data ribbon

  7. Sign in to Tiller using the account you used to subscribe to Tiller

  8. Link the workbook to your Tiller Console via the Tiller add-in.

  9. Click the Link accounts button

  10. Toggle on any accounts you want to feed data into the workbook and click Confirm

  11. Click "Fill" to update the workbook with Transactions and Balance history data.

  12. Open the workbook stored on your OneDrive using Excel online from a laptop or mobile device.

From here you can customize your workbook using Excel Online, the browser based version of Microsoft Excel. Templates with charts aren't supported in Excel Online.

ℹ️ You may need to re-add the Excel add-in from the Office Add-ins menu in Excel Online by searching for Tiller in the Add-ins Store each time you want to launch it.
